Tom Holland says working with Willem Dafoe on Spider-Man: No Way Home was “surreal”

November 18, 2021 by EJ Moreno

For any actor working today, it seems like getting the chance to star alongside the incredible Willem Dafoe must feel amazing. At least, that’s how Spider-Man actor Tom Holland made it seem.

As the latest trailer confirmed, Willem Dafoe will reprise his role from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man as Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now that the news is officially out there, Holland opened up about working with Dafoe and how it felt. During a Q&A with fans in Los Angeles, the actor gushed about the experience.

“The first rehearsal I had with him was pretty surreal for reasons I can’t really talk about because I want you to experience it in the theater. It was pretty incredible, and he’s a wonderful guy,” said Holland during the Q&A. “These guys are very excited to be coming back and bringing these roles back to life. They came to set a week before they started shooting to see what it was like. I just bumped into this guy in a cloak. I was like, ‘Watch out, mate.’ He took his hood off, and I almost got really scared. ‘Oh shit, the Goblin is here.’ But he was lovely. He was really wonderful and a real joy to work with.”

It’s wonderful to see Tom Holland gush like such a fan over Willem Dafoe and his Green Goblin. For a generation, Dafoe’s Goblin was a staple in the conversation of “iconic superhero villains,” and now a whole new group can experience that madness.

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Angourie Rice (Betty Brandt), Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Jason Ionello), Benedict Wong (Wong), J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), J.B. Smoove (Mr. Dell), Hannibal Buress (Coach Wilson), Jamie Foxx (Electro), Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus), Rhys Ifans (Lizard), Thomas Haden Church (Sandman), and Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin).

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for release on December 15th in the UK and December 17th in North America.
