The Week in Spandex – Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Wolverine 3, New Mutants, Legends of Tomorrow and more

December 5, 2015 by Gary Collinson

…20th Century Fox took its 2016 superhero slate to Sao Paulo in Brazil yesterday, and some images emerged of the banners for X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool that were on display at the Comic Con Experience, while Fox also released a new international poster for the Merc with a Mouth’s solo debut, showing off his “great ass”…

…Simon Kinberg has given an update on development on Wolverine 3, which will mark Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Logan: “We’re pretty close to a script that everyone’s excited about, and I don’t know when the start date is, but we won’t start until it’s ready to shoot,” said Kinberg of the as-yet-untitled Wolverine sequel. “What Hugh said to you is the attitude we all have—myself, Lauren Shuler Donner, the studio, [director] James Mangold, Hutch Parker—all of us, feel like this is six or seven or eight (depending on how you count) movies in the making, and there are few characters in the history of cinema who have cast as big a shadow as Wolverine, so to tell the final chapter of that story, it has to be the best, and it has to have a mythic quality to it. So we have to get it right, and I think we will, and my experience working with Jim Mangold, I’ve been extraordinarily impressed with him. He’s just a really great storyteller; he’s incredible with character. Really diligent, just a special talent. I have very high hopes for that movie…”

…Kinberg has also given an update on Josh Boone’s planned adaptation of New Mutants, stating that: “I don’t know what the production plan is. Like with all of these things, we have to get the script right. That’s the most important part of it, and they’re just working on the first draft now, but the hope is that we’ll shoot it soon. And Josh has been game with this and gave us this incredibly elaborate presentation about New Mutants. He’s a huge comic book fan and grew up loving and reading specifically New Mutants, so he came with a whole movie presentation where he laid the film out and it was really cool…”

…Despite the fact that Fox seems to be moving over to a younger generation of stars for its X-Men franchise, Anna Paquin has revealed that she’d love to reprise the role of Rogue once more, and also clarified her recent comments about only returning if she could fly: “I have had a great time on all of those films that I’ve been part of. Those are people that are very dear to me. If it happens that that’s something that makes sense for whichever of the 700 different X-Men projects that are happening which I personally can’t keep track of then that’s great. If not, they’re still fun to watch. I’ve always said that [I’d like to see Rogue fly]. I’ve been saying that since they cast me when I was 16 — like, ‘Do I get to fly?’ I made some flippant remark on Twitter about if I get to fly that was like breaking news. I’m like, OK, oh for god’s sake. Humor doesn’t translate that well in written word…”

…Entertainment Weekly unloaded a wealth of Captain America: Civil War material this week, including a cover featuring Cap (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) [see here] and several new images from the Phase Three-launching film [see here and here], while we also got a glimpse at the Sokovia Accords thanks to an image from the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two Blu-ray box set [see here]…

…EW also dropped a promotional image of Black Panther, with Marvel chief Kevin Feige going on to explain how his inclusion in Civil War came about: “We kept talking about ‘somebody like Black Panther …’ After the third or fourth time that came up in a development meeting, someone said, ‘Can’t we just do the Black Panther?’ And we all looked at each other and said, ‘Yeah, I guess we could,’ We introduce him here, give him an arc, and make him a full character. We don’t just give him a cameo, to wave. He has his own conflict and his own people that he’s looking out for.” Meanwhile, Chadwick Boseman also touched upon his character’s allegiance in the movie, adding that: “He’s definitely not the life of the party in this instance. I think this is something true of the comic book character and the movie. You never quite know where he stands. There’s always a bit of concealing and mystery. So I think mysterious is more his boat. Not to say there’s not charm and he can’t be a ladies’ man and all that. It’s more like if there is humor, it’s more like James Bond…”

…Speaking of Black Panther, it’s been reported that Fruitvale Station and Creed director Ryan Coogler is in talks with Marvel about helming the 2018 solo movie…

…Chadwick Boseman wasn’t the only star offering up some words on Civil War, with Sebastian Stan discussing The Winter Soldier and what kind of emotional state we find him in at the beginning of the movie, Scarlett Johansson talking about Black Widow’s allegiances, Robert Downey Jr. on how he feels about portraying the antagonist, and Chris Evans stating that he’d like to repay the favour to Downey by appearing as Cap in Iron Man 4…

…We’re yet to see Spider-Man in the Civil War marketing campaign, but Tom Holland has been speaking about his role, stating that the fact Spidey is in a unique position amongst the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (well, the big screen ones) in that he hides his identity behind a mask: “I think one of the most interesting things about Peter Parker for us is that he’s the only person in the MCU now that has a secret identity, so we all know who everyone else is. I think it’s quite interesting to go back to that hiding behind a mask…”

…Tom Holland has also touched upon the 2017 solo Spider-Man movie, revealing that he’d like to see the wall-crawler calling upon some of his ‘amazing friends’ from the MCU: “The one thing I’m really excited about is that he’s not a superhero that’s on his own, you know? He has connections with some of the most powerful people in this Marvel Universe so I’m quite excited to explore that and see if Marvel will go down that route, you know? Which I’m sure they will. I mean, if they’ve got all these incredible characters at hand, I mean, why not use them, you know?” As it happens, Robert Downey Jr. may have let slip that Iron Man and Captain America will appear in the film, suggesting that he and Chris Evans would be heading to Atlanta to work together. Yep, that’s where Spider-Man is set to film…
