The Week in Spandex – Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Justice League, Wonder Woman 2, The Incredibles 2 and more

July 15, 2017 by Gary Collinson

…Marvel also unveiled a Comic-Con poster for its next Netflix show The Punisher, which you can see here, while director Stephen Surjik talked about the tone of the Daredevil spinoff and how it will take a different approach to its fellow shows: “It is different than the other Marvel shows as far as it is an adult drama. There are no superpowers. You know the Punisher is a character who is based on vengeance, fundamentally. His family is a victim of some horrific thing, but the character himself is well-known and the way that they approach it is very different from the other shows…”

…In other Netflix news, it has been announced that Twilight’s Leah Gibson has been cast in the second season of Jessica Jones, where she’ll play ‘Ingrid’ (with speculation suggesting it could be the character of Typhoid Mary), and Lucy Lui has revealed that she’ll be directing the first episode of Luke Cage season two…

…ABC and IMAX’s Inhumans series also received a SDCC poster this week [take a look here], along with new images featuring Black Bolt (Anson Mount), Maximus (Iwan Rheon), Crystal (Isabelle Cornish) and Auran (Sonya Balmores) [see here and here], and promo images for Funko’s tie-in line of Pop! Vinyl figures [see here]. Meanwhile, actress Serinda Swan spoke about her role as Medusa, confirming that a combination of practical and CGI effects have been used on her hair: “One of the cool things with Medusa obviously is her hair and learning how to use it through the wig, but then also through the CGI. So there are moments where you are in fights or intense situations and you have to know how to use your face at the same time that you are using your hair, so there has been a lot of really amazing scenes where I have to sit down and go, ‘Okay. If it was my arm, how would I do it if it was my arm? What would my face do?’ And then have the duality between the two because it’s sort of another appendage for her.” Read the rest of Swan’s comments here…

…Marvel and Freeform have announced the cast for the upcoming comedy series New Warriors in Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) as Squirrel Girl, Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) as Mister Immortal, Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) as Speedball, Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) as Microbe and Kate Comer (The Comeback) as Debrii. You can find official character descriptions for the roster here…

…Hot Toys has unveiled a batch of promotional images for its Toy Fair exclusive sixth scale Ghost Rider Television Masterpiece Series figure, based on the likeness of Gabriel Luna’s Spirit of Vengeance in the fourth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; take a look at the promo images here…

…Fox has unveiled nine character motion posters for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men series The Gifted featuring Lauren Strucker, Andy Strucker, Caitlin Strucker, Reed Strucker, Agent Turner, John Proudstar/Thunderbird, Marcos Diaz/Eclipse, Lorna Dane/Polaris, and Clarice Fong/Blink; check them out here…

…Director Josh Boone took to Instagram this week to reveal that filming is now underway on X-Men: The New Mutants, meaning that – with Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix – 20th Century Fox now has three X-Men films shooting concurrently. And speaking of Dark Phoenix, we also got a look at Tye Sheridan’s Scott Summers/Cyclops sporting an updated visor in the first set photo from the next instalment of the main series, and Hugh Jackman shared a few brief comments on whether he expects to see a new take on Wolverine, stating that: “Definitely someone else will play the role, it’s a great role. You know, it’s like a Bond or it’s like a Batman, those kinds of roles. Other people will play him for sure…”

…Moving on to the DC Extended Universe and Warner Bros. has released a new image from Justice League featuring Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Ezra Miller’s The Flash [see here], while LEGO unveiled its life-size LEGO build of The Flash set to be displayed at Comic-Con [see here], Jada Toys released promo images for its Justice League Metalfigs [see here], and we got our first look at Steppenwolf thanks to a leaked image of an action figure set [see here]. And speaking of Steppenwolf, Ciaran Hinds has also been talking about his role as the villain and his motion capture performance; read Hinds’ comments here…

…Wonder Woman continues its stellar run at the box office, with the film surpassing Suicide Squad’s $745.6 million to become the second-highest grossing chapter of the DCEU behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which grossed $873.3 million last year. Domestically, the movie has also overtaken Deadpool’s $363.1 million, prompting the Merc with a Mouth to offer his congratulations on social media. Meanwhile, we also got a look at some concept art from the film [see here], and some rumours emerged regarding the alleged setting and returning characters for Wonder Woman 2, which you can read here (although have your pinch of salt at the ready)…

…Now that War for the Planet of the Apes has been released, director Matt Reeves is now turning his attention to The Batman, and he’s revealed this week that he’s ditching Ben Affleck’s earlier screenplay and will be starting from scratch: “It’s a new story; it’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool…”

…It looks like Warner Bros.’ search for a director on Suicide Squad 2 may be at an end, with reports this week suggesting that Orphan and The Shallows helmer Jaume Collet-Serra is currently the studio’s first choice to take the reins on the sequel. Mel Gibson had previously been linked to the project but decided to pass due to a production delay, while other reported contenders are said to have included Ruben Fleischer, Daniel Espinosa and Jonathan Levine. WB is said to be looking at a mid-2018 production start date on the film, and a likely release date some time in 2019…

…Click below to continue on for The Dark Knight Trilogy, Arrow, The Flash, Black Lightning, Gotham, Batman: Gotham By Gaslight, The Umbrella Academy, The Incredibles 2, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, Sky High and more…
