Venom scores second-biggest opening day for a superhero movie in China

November 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having already topped the $500 million mark around the world following its release this past month, Sony’s Venom made its way into China yesterday, where it scored the second-biggest opening day for a superhero movie behind Avengers: Infinity War.

Forbes is reporting that the Spider-Man spinoff grossed $34.2 million in the Middle Kingdom on Friday, putting it well ahead of the wall-crawler’s last solo outing Spider-Man: Homecoming, which debuted with $21.6 million.

Given those numbers, it seems likely that Venom will pass $600 million this weekend, and Forbes is estimating that the Tom Hardy-headlined solo movie could reach as high as $750 million in total if it continues to perform in China.

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, Sope Aluko and Ron Cephas Jones.
