The Week in Spandex – Gotham, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Big Hero 6, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse and more

September 27, 2014 by Gary Collinson

…Marvel’s animated series Avengers Assemble returns to Disney XD on Sunday, and this week has given us a poster and sneak peek for the second season of the show, which will see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes going up against Thanos in an effort to stop the Mad Titan from getting his hands on the Infinity Stones. Check out the poster and trailer here…

…Walt Disney Pictures has also released a new trailer for its upcoming Marvel-based animated feature Big Hero 6, which is based upon the little-known comic of the same name. You can watch the latest trailer here, along with a selection of new promos here, here and here…

…Since 20th Century Fox announced that it has finally pulled the trigger on the long-gestating Deadpool solo movie, there’s been a tonne of speculation as to whether the studio will play it safe with a PG-13 rating, or go all out with a hard-R. Well, according to co-writer Rhett Reese, a decision on the rating is yet to be made, and “there may not be an announcement for a long while.” Which – in my opinion – translates to “it’s PG-13, but we’re not going to announce it as we don’t want to kill all the positive buzz we’ve built up these past few weeks”…

…This week brought official confirmation from Fox that Bryan Singer will occupy the director’s chair for the studio’s other 2016 superhero movie X-Men: Apocalypse, which will also (re)introduce the characters of Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey – albeit younger versions of the characters to reflect the 1983 setting of the latest chapter in the X-Men universe; speaking about their inclusion, writer-producer Simon Kinberg touched upon having to recast James Marsden, Halle Berry and Famke Janssen for younger incarnations of the original X-Men trilogy characters: “It’d be very hard to do, because Halle, Famke, and Jimmy and others have done such wonderful jobs of bringing those characters to life. But I also would have said before X-Men: First Class that there would be no actors who can stand alongside Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart…”

…In one other piece of X-Men news, Simon Kinberg has revealed that the extended ‘Rogue Cut’ of X-Men: Days of Future Past will arrive next summer and offer up over 10 minutes of added footage, including Anna Paquin’s scenes as Rogue. “It’s a big chunk, a substantial part of the movie. We want to give (fans) the fullest picture of the film — behind the camera, and in front of it with the Rogue Cut and provide more of the process we went through to make the film…”

…We’ve heard on several occasions that Fox’s upcoming reboot of The Fantastic Four will by heavily inspired by the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic books, and some new plot rumours surfaced this week lending its support to that. Apparently, the Josh Trank-directed film will follow the Ultimate origin story for Marvel’s First Family, with the FF and Doctor Doom through a lab experiment gone wrong in a way, where they create a portal to another world or dimension (its not clear) and they get their powers after the exposure to this other dimension/planet…”

…Last week we got our first look at Sharlto Copley (District 9) and Susan Heyward (The Following) as Detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim in Sony Television’s upcoming Playstation Network series Powers, and now we have a few more images from the adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s comic book series, which you can see here…

…And finally, we’ve got a few superhero themed articles on Flickering Myth this week – check out Thomas Roach’s Five Actors Who Could Play Deadpool Instead of Ryan Reynolds, Should the X-Men Franchise Be Rebooted After X-Men: Apocalypse, Five Villains Who Should Be Introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Six Reasons Why Robert Downey Jr. Should Not Be Replaced as Iron Man.
