Whatever Happened To: Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark

January 19, 2021 by Gary Collinson

In the latest episode of Whatever Happened To?, EJ Moreno takes a look at Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark…

Almost a decade ago, word began circulating that Blade II and Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro was looking to bring together the supernatural characters of the DC Universe for an adaptation of the Justice League Dark comic book.

Going by the working titles Heaven Sent and Dark Universe (not to be confused with Universal’s failed Monster universe), the film would have featured the likes of Swamp Thing, Constantine, The Spectre, Deadman and Zatanna and seemed like ideal material for the filmmaker and his sensibilities.

Unfortunately, as with many a Guillermo del Toro project (see Hellboy III, At the Mountains of Madness et al), things didn’t go according to plan and del Toro ultimately exited the project in 2015, going on to direct the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water instead.

Here, in this episode of Whatever Happened To, EJ delves into Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark, and why it never happened…
