Why Aquaman doesn’t include any Justice League cameos

August 9, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Aquaman director, James Wan, has revealed why there are no cameos from the Justice League in his movie.

With Aquaman gearing up for his big screen solo debut, many fans might be expecting to see plenty of cameos in the film from his friends in the Justice League. After all, this is one of the fun perks of existing in a shared universe such as the DCEU.

However, director of the film, James Wan, has decided not to include any such cameos, telling EW that he didn’t want anything to complicate things or distract from the film’s star and his personal journey:

“I wanted to keep the story to the world of Aquaman and not have to worry about what other characters are doing in their films and how that would affect us. I just thought the simplest way was to keep it clean — keep it simple and let it be an Aquaman story.”

Continuity is certainly one of the most complicated and important components to deal with when creating films that exist in a shared universe so perhaps it’s no surprise that Wan opted for this more straightforward approach. Are you disappointed about the lack of Justice League cameos in Aquaman?

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
