Ziggurat Interactive acquires retro titles from ’80s developer Rainbow Arts

January 14, 2022 by Andrew Newton

Ziggurat Interactive will be adding to their extensive list of retro games as they announce they have closed a deal with 1980s and ’90s development studio, Rainbow Arts.  Thanks to this deal, Ziggurat will extend their games by more than 80 of Rainbow Arts’ titles, including Logical, Lollypop and X-Out.

German developer Rainbow Arts made a huge amount of games for the Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga and PC in the ’80s and ’90s with titles then being converted to other formats such as ZX Spectrum, Atari ST and PC.  Games such as Rendering Ranger R2, Logical, Lollypop, X-Out, M.U.D.S. – Mean Ugly Dirty Sport and many more will eventually become available to fans and a whole new generation of gamers.

Two games will stand out for gamers, the first is Rendering Ranger: R2, a shoot-’em up only released in Japan for the Super Nintendo and originally meant to be released in the west under the name Targa; secondly is X-Out, another shoot-’em up that proved hugely popular on British 8-bit and 16-bit systems.

Michael Devine, SVP of Business Development at Ziggurat Interactive, said of the recent purchase: “We are incredibly pleased to add a number of significant games from Rainbow Arts to Ziggurat’s growing catalogue of historic games.  Rainbow Arts was a premiere and iconic European video game publisher of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Each game released during that time frame – mainly made for the C64, Amiga, and PC – evokes memories of 16-bit wonders, colorful graphics, and playful challenges the moment you see the rainbow logo appear. We can’t wait to revitalize these games and share them with today’s classic gaming fans.”

Look out for an update on these newly acquired titles coming later this spring.
