Comic Book Review – Star Trek/Green Lantern #3

September 9, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek/Green Lantern #3…

The blockbuster crossover event of 2015 continues here, as the galaxy explodes in a Lantern-fueled war between the Federation and its enemies! Captain Kirk and the ring-bearing crew of the Enterprise must join forces with Hal Jordan to prevent the loss of entire civilizations… as the identity of the villain behind it all is revealed!

We’ve hit the halfway mark it this rather excellent crossover series Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War.  In last month’s issue [review here] we witnessed the rings choose the remaining new bearers within the Star Trek galaxy, with Yellow having already chosen General Chang. Red picked a bitter, power hungry Gorn called Glocon and Orange settle for a Romulan called Decius, who is tired of feeling chasitised and sick of his people carrying the blame for the destruction of Vulcan.  Our story rapidly follows on from here with no time to stop for breath.

As the enemies of the Empire discover their new powers by rapidly taking what they want, they also discover what lies beneath this new power as the original bearers of the rings appear, holding the co-wearer hostage until information is beaten from them.  However, on the bridge of the Enterprise, Hal Jordan is explaining to Kirk and the rest of the crew about the powers of the rings and how they came to be in the Federation Universe.  It appears that all the Ring-Bearers came together in one final battle as the mighty Nekron had risen the entire dead from across the Cosmos to fight against them.  In the final moments when all looked lost, Ganthet used his remaining life force to move the rings far from the grasp of Nekron and in-turn some of the Ring-Bearers too.

This issue is truly brilliant! I normally start my reviews with a tip of the hat to the writer, but first I wish to tip it to the Angel Hernandez and Alejandro Sanchez (art and colours) who this month have delivered something that made me look in wonder and at one point release a quiet profanity.  The wonder was in the Romulan High Council chamber where Decius is stood, a huge flaming eagle with its wings outstretched behind him, along with the ghosts of the high council in session around him.  The profanity moment was the vision of the Red Ring-bearers literally cracking open the saucer section of the USS Constellation from out of nowhere.  Amazingly powerful and fantastic to take in.

Turning to Mike Johnson’s huge part in once again making this a crossover event to remember; not only has he created those scenes above – which will stick inside this skull for a longtime – but he’s created a war in a universe that previously I knew nothing about, and now that it’s inside my head my brain screams to know more about what has gone on before.  This issue is absolutely brutal, from the Gorn’s newly discovered powers as he removes the heads of state to the take down of Decker’s ship in the blink of an eye.  There is nothing in the comic I’m expecting – everything is so refreshingly new! This comic is packed with so much energy I could stick a zinc and copper nail into it and power an alarm clock!

This is a comic you HAVE to buy!

Rating: 10/10
