Chris Sanderson reviews Doctor Who:The Twelfth Doctor #13…
Earth is under attack from an ancient species who yoked suns and spanned galaxies before we’d even evolved opposable thumbs. Crossing my desk today is the 13th issue of the Doctor Who, I’m a little late to the party but having picked it up I feel it was very simple for me to jump right in which is always nice. In this story The Doctor and Clara are in the centre of the Doctor Who Universe, London, surrounded by massive alien lifeforms which are apparently the remains of the dead after having been wiped out by an alien race known as Hyperions. This race are a group of people who are basically suns with intelligence, a form that allows them to walk and talk, they’ve reached the height of their evolution and started going supernova, which in turn drove them insane and inspired them to take out every race they helped create, and potentially destroying the entire universe. Of course there is one thing in the way stopping them from doing so, the Doctor who has been given powers as President of Earth in an emergency situation involving aliens trying to destroy the planet.
This is my first proper Doctor Who comic and being a lover of the show, I have to say they’ve really have done well to capture the personality of Peter Capaldi is Doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. In this issue they meet up with a fireman, called Sam. Pun intended! He’s a survivor who’s been living under the massacred streets of London and he’s met up with Clara. The Doctor oblivious to the reference of Fireman Sam, finds out from him what’s been going on and in his usual humour out cocky way, informing us that he’ll fix everything. They really do well to capture that essence that regardless of how dire the situation is The Doctor can fix it, and with the help of his companions he usually does. However there is always the “what if” that plays in the back of your mind, after all these are aliens which are small Suns who are capable of wiping out entire races just by pointing their fingers and blasting them with flaming hydrogen. The aliens are aware of Gallifreyan technology (specifically the TARDIS) and set in motion a plan to destroy a Time Lord, which would be quite a feat for anyone, given that The Doctor isn’t just any old Time Lord he’s the last Time Lord; the most dangerous one when he’s backed into a corner.
The issue leaves us off with Clara making the mistake of touching one of the humans still alive but enslaved by way of a telekinetic device, this alerts the aliens to their presence and when one of these aliens shows up to stop them the human explodes, knocking The Doctor unconscious leaving Clara still conscious, who watches on as many of the Hyperions make their way to their location; to finish off and kill The Doctor. This issue was quite fun and being a watcher of the show it really felt like I was watching an episode as opposed to it feeling like a different Doctor with the same face. The pacing of the issue is quite good and feels like a Doctor Who episode and with the cliffhanger I am really excited to see what happens next issue. For fans who have been into Doctor Who, if you pick this up you’ll be pleasantly surprised and if you’re new to the series and don’t mind aliens trying to destroy the planet and humorous protagonists who somehow just managed to scrape by on a daily basis then this is the comic for you!
