Pacific Rim 2 announced for April 2017

June 27, 2014 by James Garcia

It’s been nearly a year since Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim hit theaters, to favorable reviews and a generally impressive box office haul of over $400 million. However, that number wasn’t quite high enough for Legendary Pictures to greenlight a sequel, though the studio never ruled out the possibility.

Now, we’re hearing official confirmation that the apocalypse will be cancelled one more time, as Pacific Rim 2 will arrive in theaters on April 7th, 2017, while an animated television series is also in the works.

According to Variety, del Toro will once again direct the film, based on the new script from The Incredible Hulk scribe Zak Penn. The announcement doesn’t indicate whether or not the first film’s stars, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman and Ron Perlman will return, though del Toro recently hinted that at least Hunnam and Kikuchi will be back for more Jaegar vs. Kaiju action.
