Brandon Routh discusses the negative reaction to Superman Returns

September 19, 2014 by Gary Collinson

As he gears up for his return to the DC universe as Ray Palmer – a.k.a. The Atom – in the third season of Arrow, Brandon Routh has taken a moment to reflect upon his last DC Comics outing, where he played the Man of Steel in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.

Despite being a box office success upon release, criticism towards Superman Returns seems to have grown over the years, and while Routh states that “nobody has had the balls” to complain about the movie to his face, he did concede that he was aware of the criticisms towards the 2006 film.

“If they have those feelings or misgivings they vent them on the internet, which I have definitely read over the years,” Routh tells The DJ Tanner Show. “I don’t shy away from that. I like to hear what people really think. And there’s truth to everything that people say negatively. They have their own opinions about what they wanted to see.

“It doesn’t weigh on me and never really did. I took the job knowing full well that was going to be something that was going to be part of my life probably forever. Thankfully it’s in a good way. I’m proud of the movie and a lot of people enjoyed it so that helps, I guess. And having it be such an inspirational, iconic role, that’s a nice thing to carry with me and have it be part of who people see me as.”
