Don’t expect to see Spider-Ham in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, but you might get Santa Claus Burglar

December 17, 2014 by Gary Collinson

As those responsible for hacking into Sony continue to leak new files, some details have emerged concerning negotiations with Marvel about numerous minor supporting characters from the Spider-Man universe, and whether they are available to the studio for its movie franchise. And if you were hoping to see Spider-Ham on the big screen, I’m afraid you’re out of luck – at least while Sony has the Spidey movie rights…

According to Business Insider, the latest batch of leaked emails contains a spreadsheet identifying hundreds of supporting Spidey characters, and whether they are available to Sony, or have been “frozen” by Marvel. Among the little-known characters that Sony didn’t want are Mother Inferior, Agent 003 and The Black Abbot, while Marvel rejected approaches for Spider-Ham (a.k.a. Peter Porker) and Bag-Man (a.k.a. Peter Parker, with a paper bag on his head).

However, one character that Sony seemed to want to fight for is that of Santa Claus Burglar, who appeared in a single issue back in the 1980s and was a cat burgular who disguised himself as Father Christmas, before being defeated by the real Santa. Santa Claus Burglar appeared on a “disputed characters list” from 2011, which I’m guessing prevented Sony from throwing another villain into The Amazing Spider-Man 2…
