2016 sets a new domestic box office record with $11.36 billion

Hollywood is celebrating a record year at the North American box office, with THR reporting that 2016’s releases grossed $11.36 billion combined, up 2.1% from 2015’s previous record of $11.14 billion.

Disney led the way with the three biggest releases of the year in Finding Dory ($486 million), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($430 million) and Captain America: Civil War ($408 million), as well as having the fifth-highest grosser in The Jungle Book ($364 million), the seventh-biggest with Zootopia ($341 million) and tenth-biggest with Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($285 million in 2016).

Universal and Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets claimed fourth place with $368 million, while the top ten was rounded out by Deadpool ($363 million), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330 million) and Suicide Squad ($325 million).

In total, Disney enjoyed over 26% of the market share, and will be hoping to repeat its success in 2017 with a line-up that includes Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Cars 3, Thor: Ragnarok, Coco and Star Wars: Episode VIII. Disney also has a hand in Spider-Man: Homecoming, although that is being distributed by Sony.
