Comic Book Review – TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #4

June 24, 2016 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #4…

After a fight, Bebop and Rocksteady split up and travel separately to different time periods. The Dark Ages, WWI, the Future… no time period is safe!

We’re in the home stretch now which would not be a good time for B&RDE to get bogged down. Unfortunately it does.

Basically there’s just too much going on. Too many Bebops. Too many Rocksteadys.

Story wise I completely understand why we find them in such a situation. They aren’t all that clever and their best intentions just lead to more problems. It just all becomes a bit of a jumble for me. Perhaps that’s the point though? Hm.

One thing in particular I’ve really enjoyed about this series is the interactions between the main pair. Yes they’re bruisers and can shrug off bullets and buildings but they do have feelings; they can’t shrug off the hurtful words and sense of aimlessness so easily. Like all good friends they have history and they know just how to wind each other up. It all feels about as natural as a couple of gang members mutated into a rhino and a warthog can.

I can’t say I’m keen on the chunkier design choice for Bebop that is used this week. Maybe it’s more in line with a warthog but I’ve much preferred the leaner Bebop of late.

Issue 4 isn’t going to do enough to put me off this series. It’s taken an odd turn, with one time travel destination in particular an odd choice considering its seriousness. It might not be Secret History of the Foot Clan or Turtles in Time but it has been good fun so far. For all its shenanigans I don’t think it’s going to change the main title at all. All it will do ultimately (I think) is give us a better understanding of the relationship these two meatheads have with one another.

I do miss pepperoni though.

Rating: 6/10
