Daisy Ridley suggests we’ll learn the identity of Rey’s parents in Star Wars: Episode VIII

October 24, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It’s the burning question coming out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and one that’s spawned many theories since the release of the first chapter of Disney’s Sequel Trilogy last December: just who are the parents of Daisy Ridley’s Rey?

One such theory is that Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso – the protagonist of the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – could be Rey’s mother, seeing as she’s British… she’s female… and, erm… she’s in a Star Wars movie. However, speaking to Vulture, Ridley has pretty much discounted that theory, as well as heavily implying that we’ll discover Rey’s true lineage in Star Wars: Episode VIII next year.

“I mean, I think historically [the Jyn Erso theory] wouldn’t work, because she is … Darth Vader is there … so she would ultimately be my great-grandma,” said Ridley in an interview with Vulture. “No, she would be my grandma. I mean it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away.”

Asked about the possibility of Rey potentially being related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, the actress then replied, “We will see in a year. Just sit tight on that question.”

So, does that mean we’ll learn the truth in Episode VIII? And if so, is she a Skywalker? A Solo? A Kenobi? A Palpatine? Let us know your prediction in the comments below…

Star Wars: Episode VIII is set for release on December 15th 2017 and sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb), Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy), Laura Dern (Jurassic Park), Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) and Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2.
