New Logan poster released, Hugh Jackman discusses the film’s place in the X-Men timeline

January 26, 2017 by Gary Collinson

With the release of Logan drawing ever closer, Hugh Jackman has taken to Twitter to share a brand new poster for his X-Men swansong, which features a close-up of a rather weary-looking, scarred and bearded Wolverine…

Meanwhile, chatting to Digital Spy, Jackman has been discussing the R-rated solo movie, and where it fits with the rest of the X-Men franchise both in terms of tone and its timeline.

“Not only is it different in terms of timeline and tone, it’s a slightly different universe,” said Jackman. “It’s actually a different paradigm and that will become clear… I said this was my last one and they said make the movie you want to make. And so Jim Mangold and I had this blank canvas and we wanted to make something really different. Definitely tonally different, I kept thinking The Wrestler, Unforgiven. He was thinking Unforgiven as well and The Gauntlet and these other movies which just seemed to really match his character. Early on we had the idea for the title not having anything to do with Wolverine in it but just being about the man. And what the collateral damage of being Wolverine your entire life would be.”

“It’s a stand alone movie in many ways,” he continued. “It’s not really beholden to time lines and story lines in the other movies. Obviously Patrick Stewart was in there so we have some crossover but it feels very different and very fresh. [Following the timelines] becomes a chess game that you try to serve, which actually doesn’t help to tell a story and it’s sort of been a bit all over the place. I’m not critical of it – X-Men was the first movie really in comic book, no one thought there’d be another and there were different directors different off shoots.”

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan is being helmed by The Wolverine director James Mangold and will see Hugh Jackman joined in the cast by Patrick Stewart as Professor X, along with new additions Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal. It is set for release on March 1st in the UK and March 3rd in North America.
