Rumour: Obi-Wan Kenobi movie to be announced at Star Wars Celebration, Young Adult-targeted romance in development

April 1, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Over the past few years there have been numerous rumours suggesting that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking to add an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie (or trilogy) to their slate of Star Wars films, while we’ve lost count the number of times that Ewan McGregor has expressed his interest in returning to the role of the Jedi Knight.

There is of course much enthusiasm amongst fans to see McGregor back as Obi-Wan, and according to Star Wars News Net, an announcement could be forthcoming at this month’s Star Wars Celebration:

“Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of Lucasfilm fully intend to make an Obi-Wan movie set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with Ewan McGregor in tow,” claims the site. “I want to emphasize that it’s a movie, singular – not a trilogy. Rogue One’s Gareth Edwards could be returning to the director’s chair, as Kathleen Kennedy was happy with his work on that film. The team of producers and writers are going to be different than Rogue One. An announcement of an Obi-Wan movie might just be one of the big surprises at Celebration Orlando. This possibility is supported by the existence of a few materials that were made in conjunction with the event.”

In addition to the solo movie rumours, there has also been talk that McGregor could reprise the role of Obi-Wan for an appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, following his brief voice cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The site goes on to report that the long-rumoured Boba Fett movie “is not dead” and will be “a film about an ensemble of bounty hunters on an adventure” with Fett as “just one important component to the movie as opposed to the central character.” Meanwhile, a YA-oriented romance is also apparently in development, and that “said story is a tragedy…the “love story” angle has more in common with Han & Leia’s romance in The Empire Strikes Back than anything else.”

As always with rumours, these should be taken with a pinch of salt until we hear something official, but don’t be surprised at all if Lucasfilm does announce its next Anthology movie at Celebration this month.

What do you make of these rumours? Which project would you like to see moving forward as Lucasfilm’s 2020 Anthology movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
