Hugh Jackman shares his thoughts on recasting Wolverine

May 26, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Now that Hugh Jackman has hung up the claws following the release of Logan, the actor has been chatting to Collider about the eventual recasting Wolverine, and how he would go about rebooting the fan favourite mutant.

“I think one thing we’ve learned: when X-Men started, it was pretty revolutionary,” said Jackman. “Like the comic book itself, I think there was an element of breaking conventions, of opening up in the concentration camp with a character, was not what people expected. I think X-Men has always been about asking questions, challenging norms and asking what’s going on. I’m not saying we’ve done that always, but I definitely think the spirit of Logan is in a way a reboot of that desire to keep taking risks and to ask more difficult questions, and to go deeper within the characters. In an irreverent way, it’s exactly what Deadpool did too. I think it’s endemic to the character. I think for me, it would make sense to go younger with Logan. I think it would be very difficult – however, there’s a female 11-year-old who could absolutely frickin’ nail it, for my money.“

“I was 30 when I got the part, so I think it would be wide open to interpretation,” he continued. “I think it could be anything. You could go any color, any race, anything. If you look at all the drawings and all the different interpretations from different artists over the years, I think it’s completely open. I think audiences will buy it.”

Jackman isn’t the first to mention Dafne Keen’s X-23 as a potential successor to Wolverine, with the character quickly becoming a firm fan favourite. However, it seems that Fox is in no hurry to make a decision on the future of Wolverine, with producer Hutch Parker stating last week that casting another actor “is just not something I can think about.”

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan reunites Hugh Jackman with The Wolverine director James Mangold and also stars Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal.
