Michael Fassbender’s Magneto reportedly set for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, won’t appear in New Mutants

May 16, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse marked the end of the initial three film contracts for First Class stars James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast), and with 20th Century Fox readying the next slate of X-Men movies – including X-Men: Dark Phoenix and X-Men: The New Mutants – it remains to be seen which of the aforementioned actors will be returning to the franchise.

All four have suggested that they’re open to reprising their roles (with McAvoy also hinting that he’ll be back as Charles Xavier this summer), and now MTV News’ Joshua Horowitz has put out a tweet suggesting that Michael Fassbender will be back as Magneto in Dark Phoenix:

Want to know Fassbender's X-MEN future? Bet big on him appearing in DARK PHOENIX but not NEW MUTANTS. Oh, I just saw Michael Fassbender BTW

— Josh Horowitz (@joshuahorowitz) May 15, 2017

So far, the only officially confirmed cast member for X-Men: Dark Phoenix is Sophie Turner, who will be returning as Jean Grey. However, it’s been reported that James McAvoy will not be appearing in New Mutants, which would suggest that his upcoming outing as Xavier will be as part of the next instalment in the main franchise. It has also been rumoured that Fox is looking to recast the role of Rogue, who has previously been portrayed by Anna Paquin.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is reportedly set to go into production next month, so expect the cast to come together quickly. It is set for release on November 2nd 2018.
