Jon Watts “bothered” Sony and Marvel for Spider-Man: Homecoming director job

July 5, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts has admitted to bothering Sony and Marvel to be a part of the movie.

With the film rolling out around the globe this week, more and more information is starting to come out about the movie and what was going on behind the scenes.

Jon Watts himself is now spilling the beans, telling Den of Geek how he managed to work his way into the director’s chair.

“I had been wanting to make a coming of age movie, though, so when it was sort of floated that they were gonna make Spider-Man younger than we’ve ever really seen him before… that was really exciting. I had already been trying to make that sort of a movie, so I took all of those ideas I had been working on and kind of projected them onto this film.

“Then I just, kind of, bothered them. And everyone at Sony. I made like a mood reel, just editing together a bunch of clips into almost like a fake trailer. To show people the tone I was imagining. And I storyboarded a bunch of sequences that I sent to them, and just… I thought it was going to be really good practise for pitching to big studios. I really didn’t think I was gonna get it, until the very very end.”

It’s great to see such passion from a director for the project he is overseeing. And it would certainly be interesting to take a look at that mood reel Watts mentioned, and to see just how closely it lines up with the finish product.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Michael Chernus, Michael Mando, Logan Marshall-Green and Jennifer Connelly.
