Inhumans quality was “a source of contention” between ABC and Marvel

September 8, 2017 by Gary Collinson

From the moment it was first announced as part of Marvel’s feature film slate for Phase Three, Inhumans hasn’t had the easiest of rides.

Reportedly forced upon Marvel Studios by Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, the movie was pulled from Marvel’s cinematic slate when Disney decided to shake up its structure and have Kevin Feige report directly to Disney’s Alan Horn, and was subsequently announced as a TV series, co-funded by IMAX and ABC.

The Inhumans series itself has also come in for heavy criticism throughout its marketing campaign, as well as negative reviews from fans and critics following its IMAX premiere last weekend, where it grossed $2.6 million worldwide.

In a piece over at Variety, the outlet is reporting that the series has been a bone of contention between ABC and Marvel, with ABC expressing concerns over both the quality of the show’s special effects, and its underpinning scripts. However, given the investment from IMAX, the two Disney companies have viewed the series as “effectively paid for”, and are therefore not too concerned as to how it will perform once it begins its run on ABC. Nevertheless, the IMAX box office numbers are seen as disappointing, and “could dissuade future such hybrid strategies.”

Have you been disappointed so far by Inhumans? Are you looking forward to catching the full series on ABC? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Marvel’s Inhumans explores the never-before-told epic adventure of the royal family including Black Bolt, the enigmatic, commanding King of the Inhumans, with a voice so powerful that the slightest whisper can destroy a city. After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself.

Inhumans stars Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Mike Moh as Triton, Sonya Balmores as Auran, Henry Ian Cusick as Dr. Evan Declan, Ellen Woglom as Louise and Chad James Buchanan as an as-yet-unrevealed character.
