No Lando in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, according to director Rian Johnson

November 22, 2017 by Jordan Jones

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens feeling like a reunion, of sorts, with the series’ iconic characters, it’s natural to hope for even more cameos in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and one such character is Lando Calrissian.

Given the character’s upcoming appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, played by Donald Glover, it feels like a great time to catch up with Billy Dee Williams smooth talking smuggler. Well, for those hoping to see Lando in the upcoming film, prepared to be disappointed.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is mincing no words on the potential of Lando making an appearance:

“No, and I don’t want fans to get their hopes up. He’s not in the film, and it was never really something that came up. I mean, I loved that character. It would have been fun to see him, but it’s just not something that ever really had a place in the story.”

While it’s disappointing that we won’t be seeing Lando in The Last Jedi — his reaction to Han Solo’s death would be very interesting to see — fan service for the sake of fan service is never a good move. Rian Johnson seems to know this; probably why he is tapped to direct an entirely new Star Wars trilogy in the future.
