Paul Feig stills wants to make a Ghostbusters sequel

May 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With a mixed reception from audiences, and a disappointing global box office of $229 million – resulting in a $70 million loss – one would have to assume that a sequel to Paul Feig’s female-led Ghostbusters reboot isn’t exactly top of the list of priorities at Sony.

However, speaking to Yahoo at CinemaCon where he was promoting his new movie A Simple Favor [watch the trailer here], director Paul Feig has revealed that he and the cast are still open to returning for Ghostbusters 2 should the opportunity arise:

“We would love [to make another movie], it’s really up to the studio. We had so much fun making that movie. The movie’s just really built an audience in the two years since it’s been out. I get contacted every day by people who are such fans of it, and so many women who are inspired by seeing women in science. I will go to my grave so proud of that movie, and so proud of what that cast did in that film.”

While a sequel to Feig’s Ghostbusters seems unlikely, producer Ivan Reitman (director of the original Ghostbusters movies) revealed at Comic-Con last year that plans are afoot for both animated and live-action movies, and that one may be tied into the franchise’s 35th anniversary in 2019. An animated series entitled Ghostbusters: Ecto Force is also in development, but was postponed in favour of an animated feature film.

Thirty years after the original film took the world by storm, Ghostbusters is back and fully rebooted for a new generation. Director Paul Feig combines all the paranormal fighting elements that made the original franchise so beloved with a cast of new characters, played by the funniest actors working today. Get ready to watch them save the world this summer!

Ghostbusters saw Paul Feig (Spy) directing a cast that included Kristin Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Andy Garcia (The Godfather: Part III), Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Matt Walsh (Veep), Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Neil Casey (Saturday Night Live) and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), along with cameos from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts.
