SPOILERS: Jude Law’s Captain Marvel character seemingly revealed

December 1, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Warning: Potential spoilers for Captain Marvel follow…

Although original casting reports claimed that he’d be portraying Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, in next year’s female-fronted superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel, there’s been nothing in the way of official confirmation as to who Jude Law is portraying in the film, and the actor himself has refused to confirm or deny the speculation.

One of the theories that has been floated around is that Law could in fact be portraying Mar-Vell’s arch enemy Yon-Rogg, and a leaked image of an upcoming Pop! Vinyl figure from Funko may well have confirmed that…

The figure in question was included in yesterday’s official unveiling of the full Captain Marvel Pop! Vinyl line, although the character’s name there was listed as ‘Star Commander’, which certainly seems like a temporary placeholder to prevent spoilers (and Funko certainly has a track record of dropping Marvel spoilers)…

If you’re unfamiliar with the character of Yon-Rogg, he is a Kree military commander with a deep hatred of Mar-Vell, and was instrumental in Carol Danvers gaining her powers. Whether or not that remains the case in the movie, we shall have to wait and see, but it certainly seems safe to assume that he’ll end up as an enemy to Brie Larson’s Carol, and perhaps even the main villain of the film.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
