Patty Jenkins on what Kristen Wiig brings to Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984

February 17, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord isn’t the only villain that Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince is set to find herself going up against in Wonder Woman 1984, with the Amazon Princess also set to clash with her arch nemesis Cheetah, played in the DC sequel by Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters star Kristen Wiig.

As part of its Wonder Woman 1984 cover story, director Patty Jenkins has been speaking about the classic comic book villain, and why she felt that Wiig was the right person to bring Barbara Minerva to life for her big screen debut:

“In the lore, Cheetah is often someone who’s friends with Diana but jealous of her,” she says. “And I feel like Kristen’s playing a character who’s both ends of the spectrum — she’s your warm, funny friend who’s kind and interesting and then can transform into something completely different. Yes, she happens to be a woman, but she’s straight out of the Gene Hackman Superman school of great, funny, tremendous actors. I don’t think of her being a female villain, although she is. I feel that way about Wonder Woman, too. The female component of it is huge, but she’s also just a hero, a universal hero.”
