Shazam! 2 director says filming was expected to start this year

April 2, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Shazam! 2, the follow-up to 2019’s superhero origin story, was planned to start shooting this year for a 2022 release but due to the current global health crisis, director David F. Sandberg is unsure how the production schedule will move forward.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, Sandberg revealed while he is currently unaware if Warner Bros. will delay production on Shazam! 2, he is continuing to work on the script at home.

“Well, we’ll see how long this goes, because I mean, we were going to start shooting this year,” Sandberg said. “But, I mean, who knows how long this will go on? I mean, it feels like every movie gets delayed now, so we’ll see what happens with Shazam!. But so far, I’ve been working on the script. We can still do that, so that’s being done and then, yeah, we’ll just see in a couple of months how it looks, you know?”

“Some of [the time] has been watching movies,” Sandberg says. “We have a little bit of work that we can do remotely, we have meetings via Zoom. I’ve never heard of that app before this happened, and now it’s all Zoom. Yeah, it’s not too weird for us. We’re indoors a bit more. I’m sitting down and learning new software and doing little tests, things like that.”

Shazam! 2 will reunite star Zachary Levi with director David F. Sandberg and screenwriter Henry Gayden. Both Asher Angel (Billy Batson), Jack Dylan Grazer (Freddy Freeman), and the rest of the Shazam Family are expected to return for the sequel. However, according to Levi, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam won’t be making an appearance until Shazam! 3 as The Rock is focusing on his own 2021 movie first.
