Rumour: Dave Filoni to oversee interconnected live-action Star Wars shows for Disney+

June 17, 2020 by Samuel Brace

A new rumour suggests that Dave Filoni will be overseeing regular live-action Star Wars shows for Disney+ that will interconnect with one another.

Dave Filoni made his name with Star Wars animated projects like The Clone Wars and Rebels but more recently has been executive producing The Mandalorian and even directing episodes. And if a new rumour is to be believed, Lucasfilm is putting more responsibility on his shoulders by giving him multiple live-action shows to oversee on Disney+.

LRM Online reports that a source inside Lucasfilm has told them that Lucasfilm is planning to release regular live-action Star Wars TV shows on Disney+, starting in mid-2021, releasing every quarter.

“According to my source at Lucasfilm the plan is to create a universe where all the shows will be connected with a central storyline. One big inspiration was the popular Game of Thrones series. I know it’s a weird comparison, but let me explain. Instead of making one epic Game of Thrones show, it’d be like if each family had their own show with a central storyline that spills over into the others.”

The report says that Dave Filoni will be the man in charge, which makes sense considering which shows are reported to be apart of the enterprise. LRM says that the interconnected shows will include The Mandalorian, an Ahsoka Tano show, a Boba Fett show, an Ezra Bridger/Grand Admiral Thrawn show, and an unknown series.

These shows would likely all take place in a similar time period in the galaxy, one would guess around the time of The Mandalorian post-Return of the Jedi. This would make sense why the Obi-Wan and Cassian shows are not included in this project as they are set between the Prequel and Original Trilogies.

While this is, of course, just a rumour, if this turns out to be true it would be exciting indeed! Filoni is intimately familiar with Ashoka, Ezra and Thrawn from his animation days, and works on The Mandalorian already so this doesn’t seem far-fetched in that sense. Here’s hoping!
