Paul W.S. Anderson doubts he will ever return for another Resident Evil movie

October 13, 2020 by Liam Waddington

After writing and/or directing every instalment in the original Resident Evil film series, filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson has discussed his future with Capcom’s beloved horror franchise.

Speaking during a New York Comic Con Metaverse panel, Anderson revealed that he doubts he will return to the world of Resident Evil because he and his wife/franchise lead Milla Jovovich told the story they wanted to tell.

“After making six movies, 1.2 billion dollars, you know, the most successful video game adaptation ever, I’m very… I think we did our job. We did great work. We closed it up really nicely, and now we’ve launched into something brand new, which is Monster Hunter, and I’m very excited to kind of put my energy into energies into that,” Anderson said.

Throughout the six movies in the series, Anderson wrote and directed four instalments including Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Resident Evil: Retribution, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, while only serving as screenwriter for two entries including Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Resident Evil: Extinction.

Following the conclusion of the Resident Evil film series, Anderson is adapting Monster Hunter – another popular Capcom video game franchise – alongside Jovovich which is currently scheduled to release in December 2020. You can check out a new featurette for Monster Hunter here which sees Anderson discussing the film’s monster designs with director and producer of the Monster Hunter video game series Kaname Fujioka and Ryozo Tsujimoto.

Meanwhile, a new Resident Evil feature film reboot is in the works from Constantin Film and director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down), which promises to take the series back to the horror roots of the source material and has just announced a cast that includes Robbie Amell (The Babysitter) as Chris Redfield, Kaya Scodelario (Crawl) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, Neal McDonough (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) as William Birkin and Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker.
