Tom Holland says Spider-Man: No Way Home script was rewritten on an “almost daily basis” during filming

November 19, 2021 by EJ Moreno

There’s no secret that the road to Spider-Man: No Way Home has been interesting. From leaks to reshoots to polarizing trailers, the film has been on quite the journey, and it seems the struggle went all the back to filming as star Tom Holland recently spoke with GQ, and the actor let loose some strange information concerning the production of his third Spider-Man movie.

“I kept stopping and being like, ‘I’m so sorry, I just don’t believe what I’m saying.’ ” said Holland, who mentioned pulling director Jon Watts asides and bringing up the script issues with him. “We sat down, we went through it, and we came up with a new idea. Then we pitched it to the writers, they rewrote it, and it works great.”

GQ added that Spider-Man: No Way Home was rewritten on an “almost daily basis”, with Holland telling the outlet that “You could ask the director, ‘What happens in act three?’ And his response would be, ‘I’m still trying to figure it out.’”

The actor claims his ability to speak up on-set comes from a fellow Marvel actor. “I actually learned this from Elizabeth Olsen,” he said. “She gave me an amazing piece of advice: ‘No’ is a full sentence. ‘No’ is enough.”

Now, this is quite interesting for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Usually, these productions are well-oiled machines under the rule of Kevin Feige, and if there are issues, they rarely see the light of day. With the film only a month away, what will the final product be like? Will the nostalgia and multiverse shenanigans be enough to look past any script or story flaws from all these rewrites? We will find out when the film opens this December.

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home) directing Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Zendaya (MJ), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Angourie Rice (Betty Brandt), Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Jason Ionello), Benedict Wong (Wong), J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), J.B. Smoove (Mr. Dell), Hannibal Buress (Coach Wilson), Jamie Foxx (Electro), Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus), Rhys Ifans (Lizard), Thomas Haden Church (Sandman), and Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin).

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for release on December 15th in the UK and December 17th in North America.
