HBO confirms The Last of Us series won’t premiere in 2022

February 17, 2022 by Liam Waddington

HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys has confirmed that the upcoming series adaptation of the beloved video game franchise The Last of Us won’t be premiering in 2022.

In an interview with Deadline, Bloys confirmed that The Last of Us is “not going to air in 2022” as the series is currently still filming in Canada. Despite Bloys announcing that fans are going to have to wait another year for the series, the executive later revealed his first impressions of the show.

“I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited. Craig [Mazin] did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing, so I’m excited for it, but it will not be in ’22.”

Written by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) who will play Joel and Ellie respectively, with Gabriel Luna set to play Joel’s brother, Tommy, Merle Dandridge reprising her video game role as Marlene, Nico Parker (The Third Day) as Joel’s daughter, Sarah, Jeffrey Pierce (Bosch) as Perry, a rebel in a quarantine zone, Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) as Frank, Anna Torv (Mindhunter) as Tess, and Storm Reid (Euphoria) as Riley.

The Last of Us is “set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centres on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”
