Sam Taylor-Johnson to direct Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black

July 12, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Over a decade after the generational talent that was Amy Winehouse passed away, Studiocanal have decided to pick up the mic on a biopic titled Back to Black, with Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson calling the shots.

Deadline reports that Back to Black is now being fast-tracked thanks to Taylor-Johnson’s involvement, who will work from a script by Matt Greenhalgh. The two previously collaborated on another big-screen biopic of a musical icon with 2009’s John Lennon pic Nowhere Boy.

Back to Black will be made with the full backing of the Winehouse estate and is expected to chart the life and music of the iconic star, who started off as a North London jazz singer before eventually becoming a Grammy-winning music superstar with hit records that included Valerie and Back To Black. She tragically died in 2011 at the age of 27 after a long battle with addictions.

A biopic has been mooted for years, with Noomi Rapace linked to the central role as far back as 2015. However, only Asif Kapadia’s beautifully judged Oscar-winning documentary Amy has made it to the big-screen.

Do you think a biopic could ever do the mercurial Amy Winehouse justice? Let us know what you think about Back to Black by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
