The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to get theatrical release before Prime Video debut

August 23, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

If Amazon are going to spend over $1 billion on a television series, then it makes sense to see it in the best way possible, and so that’s what the studio are doing (in the U.S. at least) by releasing the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on the big screen days before it hits the streaming service.

Deadline reports that Amazon have teamed up with Cinemark to screen the debut episodes on August 31st for one night only, before the eagerly anticipated series lands on the Prime Video home page on September 2nd. Details for the screenings can be found here.

From the moment the first teasers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power landed online, fans had been wondering whether they’d be able to immerse themselves in Middle-Earth in the same breath-taking way they did with Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. There’s no word yet as to whether a similar roll-out will be available in different territories around the world.

Let us know whether you’d prefer to experience The Rings of Power on the biggest screen possible, or if you’d rather watch it from the comfort of your own home? What other shows would you have liked to have seen debut in the cinema? Stranger Things? Obi-Wan Kenobi? Head to our social channels @FlickeringMyth to let us know….

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power stars Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Maxim Baldry, Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman, Anthony Crum, Maxine Cunliffe, Trystan Gravelle, Lenny Henry, Thusitha Jayasundera, Fabian McCallum, Simon Merrells, Geoff Morrell, Peter Mullan, Lloyd Owen, Augustus Prew, Peter Tait, Alex Tarrant, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, and Sara Zwangobani.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to premiere on September 2nd 2022.
