The Walking Dead season 8 finale scores lowest ratings since season 1

April 20, 2018 by Gary Collinson

The Walking Dead aired its season 8 finale this past Sunday, and while ‘Wrath’ enjoyed a bump in ratings week-over-week, it wasn’t enough to halt the ratings decline that the AMC zombie drama has been suffered the past couple of years.

Scoring a 3.4 rating in the key 18-49 demo, and 7.9 million viewers overall, the season 8 finale scored the lowest numbers since the show’s first season back in 2011. Here’s how the various season finales stack up:

  • Season 5 (2015)–8.2 rating, 15.8 million
  • Season 4 (2014)–8.0 rating, 15.7 million
  • Season 6 (2016)–6.9 rating, 14.2 million
  • Season 3 (2013)–6.4 rating, 12.4 million viewers
  • Season 7 (2017)–5.4 rating, 11.3 million
  • Season 2 (2012)–4.7 rating, 9 million viewers
  • Season 8 (2018)–3.4 rating, 7.9 million
  • Season 1 (2011)–3.0 rating, 6 million viewers

Overall, the eighth season averaged a 3.4 rating, and 7.8 million viewers. Given the decline since the heights of the fifth season, AMC will surely be hoping that the introduction of new showrunner Angela Kang helps to put some life back into the series when it returns for its ninth season later this year.
