Rumour: The Flash movie ditching Flashpoint storyline

May 14, 2018 by Gary Collinson

During last year’s Comic-Con, Warner Bros. announced that it had changed up its plans for The Flash, revealing that the planned solo movie for Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster would instead adapt the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which features a depowered Barry Allen in an alternate DC universe.

Having passed through the hands of directors Seth Grahame-Smith (The LEGO Batman Movie) and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), it was announced in March that Game Night directors and Spider-Man: Homecoming writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley had boarded the movie. And now comes a rumour suggesting that Warner Bros. and DC Films may have ditched Flashpoint and reverted to their original plan.

Last month, Borys Kit of THR posted on social media that he’d heard the movie was no longer going by the title of Flashpoint, but could still adapt the source material, and now it is being rumoured that the project is no longer going down the Flashpoint route at all.

Following the above tweet from El Mayime, Revenge of The Fans shared a report claiming that Flashpoint was intended to serve as a “reset” for the DC Extended Universe, but that recently appointed DC Films chief Walter Hamada is not interested in rebooting the universe and wants to press on with what has already been established.

Furthermore, the outlet claims that the decision to drop Flashpoint “goes hand-in-hand with the end of Ben Affleck’s tenure as Batman”, suggesting that Affleck has decided to hang up the cape and cowl and will presumably be recast for future DCEU appearances such as The Batman.

At this point, it’s worth stressing that these sources aren’t always the most reliable, but there’s usually no smoke without fire. Hopefully we’ll get some official clarification both on The Flash movie and The Batman in the very near future, as all of this continued rumour and speculation certainly isn’t doing the DCEU any favours.

Would you be disappointed if Warner Bros. and DC Films decides to go down a traditional Flash solo movie route, rather than Flashpoint? Let us know in the comments below…
