Flickering Myth’s Favourite Trailers from E3 2018

June 14, 2018 by Calum Petrie

Our gaming culture is filled with competition and arguments, wither it be on the couch, online or on a discussion forum. When the Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3 as I will be referring to it) comes around every year, the imaginary competition and the “Who won E3?” comments start popping up. These imaginary competitions between fan-boys/girls/whoever start to sully the good name of computer games, they also make it very easy to forget the amazing time and effort developers put into creating the games and trailers.

The team at Flickering Myth have been putting together a list of some of their favourite trailers from the show, so we compiled them into a list. We will show some and link others, if you don’t see your favourites in the list then let us know.

First up we have Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the new title from… well, FROM Software. The evil geniuses behind Demon Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne are at it again but with a feudal Japanese backdrop. A trailer titled Shadows Die Twice was teased a few months ago and finally at the Xbox Conference our questions were answered.

Though shown at the Xbox conference this is in no way an Xbox exclusive – they just had the worldwide reveal of the title.

Next we head to the EA conference to show off the trailer for Anthem, this long awaited title divided some after being shown. The concept of gameplay and longevity sound extremely similar to failed promises made by Bungie and Activision for Destiny.

Anthem will give players a choice of mechanised armours to wear on their journeys out into the cruel and danger riddled world of Anthem. The four character classes and options for customisation give this Bioware title a more varied edge than Destiny, but time will tell if it can deliver on its promises.

Sticking with EA two amazing games shown off from the EA Originals platform were Unravel Two (which has been reviewed on the site already) and the new and interesting Sea of Solitude. This title appears to use loneliness and depression, though in game it is represented by the player character slowly turning into a monster. The aim of the game is to explore the flooded world and try to regain the humanity that you have lost from being alone so long.

Kingdom Hearts III was shown at a number of conference, though with its release date finally cemented as January 25th 2019. The trailers on show seemed to stick to the more modern Disney/Pixar films while displaying some outstanding visuals for the long awaited title.

The Last of Us Part II was a powerhouse trailer for Sony during the PlayStation conference, the emotional trailer showed both love and death in one cinematic display. This title is one that Naughty Dog did not even have to show in as much detail, though their loyalty to their fans is touching as the sequel nobody ever expected is arriving possibly late 2018, early 2019.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 shows a summer version of 2016’s Manhattan winter apocalypse. The setting has moved to Washington D.C. and The Division are more equipped and in a much larger environment to deal with the gangs, factions and armies that oppose order where players will deliver a great helping of freedom to the faces of those who shoot at them.

Bethesda also were at the show, they showed off gameplay for RAGE and Doom Eternal, while also teasing a totally new I.P Starfield and teased the entire gaming community with a sneak at The Elder Scrolls VI.

The real reason anyone was watching the conference however, was to find out more about the latest for Fallout 76. The game that came out of nowhere to tease, scare and intrigue fans all around the world.

Xbox showed off the world wide reveal of a much loved Capcom franchise with Devil May Cry 5. The confusion hits as the character show in the trailer looks similar to Dante in the DmC: Devil May Cry reboot from Ninja Theory. The character in the trailer turns out to be an older Nero from Devil May Cry 4, with a sneak peek at an older looking Dante at the end…

One of the biggest pops of the show had to be CD Projekt RED showing off Cyberpunk 2077 at the end of the Xbox conference. The game that has been teasing people all around the world for years has finally dropped some details on its setting, gameplay style and story.

The game is confirmed to be a first person RPG with gun play elements and will have skill trees and fully customisable characters. We await much more information about this game in the months to come and hopefully some mention of a release date in the near future.

We know there were a lot more trailers on show, but narrowing them down into a list is an extremely hard thing to do. Hopefully you comment below your favourite trailers from E3 2018…
