James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli reportedly leaning towards Idris Elba for next 007

August 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With Daniel Craig set to make his fifth and final appearance as James Bond in next year’s as-yet-untitled Bond 25 from director Danny Boyle, the rumour mill appears to be wasting little time in looking towards his replacement as 007.

According to The Independent, The Equalizer 2 director Antoine Fuqua revealed details of a conversation he had with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, stating that she said “it is time” for a non-white actor to portray the British super-spy. Apparently Broccoli said that it “will happen eventually” and the two then discussed who might be in the running, with Idris Elba (Luther) said to be the frontrunner.

Elba has previously been mentioned as a possible 007, and was said to have been the favourite of then Sony chief Amy Pascal according to leaked documents from the Sony hack back in 2014. Elba has said on several occasions that he’d be very interested in the role, but in 2016 he also suggested that he may be too old to play the character (he’ll be 47 when Bond 25 opens, just four years short of Daniel Craig).

Bond 25 isn’t set to arrive until October of next year, so it would seem unlikely that we’ll get any official news on Craig’s successor prior to then. And, of course, we’re sure to be inundated with rumours about possible contenders in the lead up to the announcement.

Who would you like to see as the next 007? Would Idris Elba be a good fit for Bond, or do you think he may be too old for the role? Let us know in the comments below…
