Warner Bros. and DC Films seeking female director for Supergirl movie

August 19, 2018 by Gary Collinson

This probably won’t come as too much of a surprise given the critical and commercial success of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, but Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. and DC Films are currently searching for a female filmmaker to take the reins on the recently announced Supergirl movie.

According to the trade, Warner Bros. is “looking for the women of the DC universe to help boost their superhero stable”, with the studio having already hired Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) for New Gods and Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) for the Harley Quinn-headlined Birds of Prey.

Jenkins meanwhile is currently hard at work shooting the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 with Gal Gadot returning as the Amazon Princess, while a Batgirl movie remains in development for the DCEU and is also rumoured to be on the look out for a female director.

The news of a Supergirl movie first surfaced earlier this month, with Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox) attached to write the script.

The character – Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El – currently appears in her own TV series on The CW, portrayed by Melissa Benoist, while Helen Slater took on the role in the 1984 Superman spinoff movie Supergirl.
