Tony Gilroy shines light on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story reshoots

October 24, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Tony Gilroy has teased the state Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was in when he came in to direct the reshoots.

Today, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story holds a high place in the pantheon of Star Wars films for many a fan, with the movie giving a fascinating look into the pivotal mission to steal the first Death Star plans.

The film wasn’t always looking like a winner, however, as Tony Gilroy was drafted in to fix parts of the film during reshoots. Speaking at a Montclair State University event (via NorthJesery.com), Gilroy said about the characters:

“When things pass through many hands and there’s a great deal of confusion … and there’s all kinds of accessories and jewelleries and bootstraps and zippers, and all the rest of the stuff. The purity for the characters, if it’s not there to begin with, it just deteriorates and just turns into an absolute mush.”

Gilroy has, in past interviews, spoken of the trouble the film was in and that when he came on board, “they were in such a swamp – they were just in terrible, terrible trouble, that all you could do was improve their position.”

Luckily, the film that ended up in cinemas delighted the vast majority of Star Wars fans. Thankfully, Gilr0y was able to take what Rogue One director Gareth Evans started and fine tune it into what it is today.

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sees Gareth Edwards (Monsters) directing a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), James Earl Jones (Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope), Valene Kane (The Fall), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager), Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode IV – Return of the Jedi), Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones) and Jonathan Aris (Sherlock).
