Rumour: Marvel to release Black Widow and The Eternals in 2020

October 30, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Although we’re only eight months away from the launch of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios has been keeping a very tight-lid on its plans for the MCU beyond the web-slinger’s second solo outing.

Before James Gunn’s dismissal, it had been revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would arrive at some point in 2020, but with that now confirmed as being on hold, That Hashtag Show is reporting that we’ll now only get two of Marvel’s three planned releases in 2020, with Black Widow arriving on May 1st 2020 followed by The Eternals on November 6th 2020.

Now, this may just be speculation, but given that Black Widow and The Eternals both have scripts in hand and directors on board in Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) and Chloe Zhao (The Rider) respectively, it seems safe to assume that these projects are among the furthest down the line at Marvel and likely to be closest to production.

In addition to the May 1st and November 6th dates, Marvel does also have an untitled release slotted in for July 31st 2020. There’s been speculation that Doctor Strange 2 could be lined up as a replacement for Guardians Vol. 3, but if this report from THS is accurate, it seems that the studio may be willing to give up its summer date.

Would Marvel be happy to go into a year with only a solo movie for a second tier character along with a new and untested IP? Perhaps – but we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see something occupying that July date too.
