Once Upon a Deadpool details revealed ahead of December release

November 5, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last month, 20th Century Fox announced a December 12th release date for an ‘Untitled Deadpool Movie’, which was immediately rumoured to be a PG-13 cut of this year’s hit sequel Deadpool 2.

Well, the studio has now confirmed that the project – officially titled Once Upon a Deadpool – will indeed present a re-edited, PG-13 version of Deadpool 2, complete with a framing sequence inspired by The Princess Bride. The new footage, eight scenes in total, will riff upon the bedtime-story setup of the 80s cult classic, with The Wonder Years’ Fred Savage reprising his role.

With $734 million in the bank, Deadpool 2 is Fox’s biggest release of the year (and the only Fox title to crack the top 30), and Deadline is reporting that the re-edited version offers the studio the chance of a “Christmas bonus”, as well as a potential first release in China. Apparently, “the response to the PG-13 repackaging is also being watched closely by the leadership at Disney and its Marvel Studios and may inform the way they incorporate Deadpool into their plans.”

In addition to boosting Fox’s own coffers, Ryan Reynolds has revealed that there is also a charity element to the release, stating that: “Because it’s the season of giving, we will also be giving $1 for every ticket sold to Fuck Cancer, which will be renamed Fudge Cancer just for this limited time and campaign.”

Once Upon a Deadpool will receive a limited engagement from December 12th through to Christmas Eve. Let us know in the comments below if you’re looking forward to seeing this PG-13 take on the Merc with a Mouth…

Marvel’s motormouth mercenary is back! Bigger, better and occasionally more pantless than ever before. When a super soldier arrives on a murderous mission, Deadpool is forced to think about friendship, family and what it really means to be a hero – all while kicking 50 shades of ass. Because, sometimes, to do the right thing you need to fight dirty.

Deadpool 2 sees David Leitch (John Wick) directing a cast that includes returning stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al) and Karan Soni (Dopinder) alongside new additions Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Bedlam, Lewis Tan (Iron Fist) as Shatterstar, Bill Skarsgard (It) as Zeitgeist, Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) as Russell, Jack Kesy (The Strain) as Black Tom Cassidy and Shioli Kutsuna (The Outsider) as Yukio.
