Disney announces animated Jack and the Beanstalk film Gigantic

August 15, 2015 by Justin Cook

Walt Disney Animation Studios has revealed that they will be making an animated Jack and the Beanstalk film titled Gigantic.

Gigantic, which was announced at Disney’s D23 Expo, will be a musical set in Spain during the Age of Exploration. Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the Oscar-winning team behind Disney’s Frozen, are on board to write the songs for the film, while Nathan Greno (Tangled) will direct and Dorothy McKim will produce.

The film will tell the story of Jack, a man who discovers a world of giants in the sky, and a giant named Inma, a feisty, 11-year-old girl. The two become friends and embark on an epic adventure together.

On tackling such a classic tale, Greno said, “We hope this will be the definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk… with comedy and deep emotion.”

He added, “You have to look at the original story, the iconic imagery, and then you have to mix in some twists and turns.”

Lopez and Anderson-Lopez also debuted one of the film’s songs, from a scene where Inma finds Jack in her room. The lyrics included, “You can toss him in the air, you can comb his air, my itty bitty man, I love my little man.”

Disney’s “Gigantic” follows adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds. He hatches a grand plan with Inma, a 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old girl, and agrees to help her find her way home. But he doesn’t account for her super-sized personality—and who knew giants were so down to earth?

Gigantic will hit theaters in 2018.
