Westworld adds Vincent Cassel for third season

April 30, 2019 by Ricky Church

The third season of HBO’s hit sci-fi series Westworld will see the addition of another new face. According to Deadline, Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) has joined the series in a series regular role for the upcoming season. While his exact role is being kept under wraps, Cassel is expected to be the season’s new villain.

“We’re incredibly excited to work with Vincent Cassel,” creators and showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy said. “We’ve been longtime fans of his and are thrilled for him to join the Westworld team.”

Cassel joins newcomers Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Lena Waithe (Master of None) for the third season. Like Cassel’s, their roles are also being kept secret.

While light on details, Nolan previously revealed that fans can expect season three to be very different from the previous two:”I think it’s a radical shift. What’s compelling and appealing about these characters is that they’re not human. As we said in the show, humans are bound by the same loops the hosts are, in some ways even smaller. You couldn’t expect human characters to withstand and survive the kind of story that we’re telling. The hosts have a different version of mortality, a different outlook. I think clearly with Dolores, as she’s laid out, there is a longer view here, a larger set of goals. They’re existential. They span eons. And that’s a fascinating level of story to engage in.”

Westworld is based on the 1973 film written by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton. It tollows an amusement park filled with robotic ‘hosts’ as they begin to gain true consciousness and rebel against their human masters. The series has starred Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, Jeffery Wright, Tessa Thompson, Jimmi Simpson and Anthony Hopkins. The third season is currently in production and will air in 2020.
