Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: Kylo Ren’s helmet may actually be inspired by the Knights of Ren

October 10, 2019 by Samuel Brace

The helmet of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker antagonist Kylo Ren may actually have been inspired by the Knights of Ren according to a new Star Wars book.

There is no question that Kylo Ren has a distinctive look, mostly due to his unique lightsaber and eye-catching mask. It was assumed that his followers, the Knights of Ren took inspiration for their own masks from his but might it be the other way around?

A description in the official book Ultimate Star Wars New Edition (via ScreenRant) reads: “Kylo Ren’s helmet is designed in the style of the Knights of Ren. It is also reminiscent of the infamous mask of his grandfather, Darth Vader, connecting Kylo Ren to the dark side of his family heritage.

“The helmet conceals his former identity as Ben Solo (also obscured by the helmet’s vocoder which makes his voice sound more threatening), and serves to intimidate both his enemies and his subordinates in the First Order. Beyond this and the protection it affords, the helmet has no special functions.”

There you have it. Perhaps this text indicates that the Knights of Ren weren’t recruited by Kylo at all – if his mask was indeed inspired by theirs. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter @flickeringmyth.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 19th 2019 in the UK and December 20th 2019 in North America with J.J.
