Ewan McGregor talks Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars series, has known about his return for four years

October 26, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After reworking its plans for an Anthology movie following the poor performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm finally announced the return of Obi-Wan Kenobi this August, with Ewan McGregor set to reprise his role as the Jedi Master for a live-action TV series on Disney+.

Speaking to Men’s Journal to promote the release of his new film Doctor Sleep, McGregor admitted that it was “a fucking massive relief” when his return was made official, as “for four years, I’ve been having to lie to people about it.”

McGregor also went on to reveal that the series will run for six hour-long episodes, with production set to get underway in summer 2020, and will explore the way Kenobi deals with the shocking events of Revenge of the Sith.

“It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him … well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over. I want to get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him. I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that.”

Before we get to the Obi-Wan series, Disney and Lucasfilm have The Mandalorian premiering on Disney+ next month, while development also continues on a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story revolving around the character of Rebel spy Cassian Andor.
