Anakin Skywalker Force Ghost was never planned for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

January 8, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is packed full of memorable moments worthy of discussion, with one of the biggest being the film’s ending where Luke and Leia appear to Rey as Force Ghosts.

Many were hoping that Anakin and perhaps the redeemed Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) might turn up as well, however. While many discussions were had about the use of force ghosts, according to VFX supervisor Roger Guyett, Anakin and Ben were never planned.

Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment, Guyett said about Kylo’s absence: “My interpretation of it anyway is that when you see Luke and Leia there, it’s about the Skywalker [legacy].”

Guyett also mentions how an onscreen appearance by Anakin was never on the cards, just the voice cameo along those other fallen Jedi who gave power to Rey when battling Palpatine: “I thought that was a really fabulous moment.”

Would you like to have seen Anakin and Ben turn up at the end of the film? Or do you think that would have detracted from Luke and Leia’s appearance as force ghosts together? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter @flickeringmyth.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E.
