The Week in Disappointment – Iron Fist, The Punisher, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Man of Steel, Deadpool, The Walking Dead, Ghostbusters, Spider-Man

November 1, 2015 by Anghus Houvouras

Anghus Houvouras with this week’s disappointments from the entertainment world…

“Rumour: Marvel to replace Iron Fist Netflix series with The Punisher”

Let’s start with he week’s most disappointing news. The Iron Fist Netflix series potentially getting scrubbed for a Punisher series. Marvel has been trying to get Punisher right for ages. And after seeing Daredevil, I’m confident they could give us the best version of Punisher we’ve ever seen. But here’s the hard truth: The Punisher works better as a supporting character. The minute you put him front and center is the minute you realize how painfully thin of a character he is. Yes, the costume is cool and the skull is iconic. But I’ve already seen enough attempts at a live action Punisher to realize it’s not going to pan out. Iron Fist, on the other hand, is a character who hasn’t been given the live action treatment and one that could potentially be quite awesome. Maybe the fourth time will be the charm, but I’m doubtful.

“Harrison Ford promises we won’t be disappointed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens”

Harrison, I love you. You’re my boy. But clearly you’re unfamiliar with my body of work. And while you’re probably right, I’ve been burned before. George Lucas said the same thing before The Phantom Menace. Ridley Scott said the same thing before Prometheus. McG said the same thing before Terminator: Salvation. I want to believe, Han Solo… I really do.

“Anthony Mackie hates Man of Steel”

Finally, somebody is brave enough to say what we’ve all been thinking. An objective, unbiased voice emerges to drop some science. This is the kind of science Papa Doc should have been dropping on Rabbit in the final round of 8 Mile. Zack Snyder replied that he thought The Adjustment Bureau was ‘total bollocks’.

“Deadpool will get an IMAX release”

Because you haven’t heard snark until you’ve heard it mixed in super surround sound. It might be worth the eight extra dollars per ticket to see Ryan Reynolds’ six-pack the size of a football field. Abdominal muscles so big you could climb them like a rock wall. I’m sorry… what were we talking about?

“The Walking Dead officially renewed for a seventh season.”

Thank God. I was getting worried. Without support, this plucky little critical darling might not make it…

“Dan Aykroyd says Ghostbusters reboot may be “better than” original”

Careful Danny boy. There are some things you can’t take back.

“Sam Raimi would love to return to the Spider-Man franchise”

Sam. I love you. You’re my boy. But I think it’s pretty obvious that the franchise is in capable hands. I mean, it’s not like Sony totally cratered the franchise after you left the series…
