Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker writer says ending the film wasn’t easy

April 8, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Chris Terrio, the writer of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, says at one point he and J.J. Abrams found ending the film, and the saga, a challenge.

The Rise of Skywalker didn’t just have the task of ending the sequel trilogy, it had the huge responsibility of ending the entire Skywalker saga. This was no easy feat, as you can imagine, and writer Chris Terrio has admitted the challenges.

Speaking on the making-of documentary (via Screen Rant) that comes with Episode IX‘s home release, the writer said: “J.J. and I were having a lot of trouble with the end of the film at one point in the process, and [production designer] Rick Carter said to us, ‘I think it’s because you two don’t want Star Wars to be over. You don’t want the Skywalker Saga to be over, so you don’t really want to write it.’ And I think there was a lot of truth in that.”

Ending something you don’t want to finish is certainly no easy task. And perhaps the somewhat open-ended nature of Episode IX is reflected in this. Fans of Rey and her journey will certainly be left wanting to see what she gets up to next – much like Luke in Return of the Jedi.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
