Labyrinth sequel lands Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson as director

May 26, 2020 by EJ Moreno

The world of Labyrinth will get a bit more sinister and strange with Deadline reporting that Scott Derrickson will helm the sequel to the 1986 cult classic fantasy.

The Sinister and Doctor Strange director will take over directorial duties from Fede Alvarez, who was initially attached to direct. Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed Into the Dark and My Valentine for Hulu, will pen the script.

Little is known about the plot of the sequel, or if Jennifer Connelly will return to the role of Sarah. Sadly, star David Bowie, who portrayed Jareth the Goblin King, passed away in 2016.

The 1986 film told the story of a 16-year old girl who is given 13 hours to solve a labyrinth and rescue her baby brother when her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King.

Scott Derrickson is executive producing the sequel for TriStar Pictures alongside frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill (Sinister), with Lisa Henson producing and Brian Henson also on board to executive produce.

Derrickson was most recently attached to the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but left the project over creative differences with Marvel Studios. The filmmaker is also set to direct the thriller Bermuda for Skydance.
