James Gunn wrote The Suicide Squad’s Bloodsport specifically for Idris Elba

September 8, 2020 by Samuel Brace

James Gunn, the director of The Suicide Squad, has revealed that he wrote the character of Bloodsport specifically for Idris Elba.

Anticipation for DC’s upcoming slate of movies has really kicked up a gear after the recent DC FanDome event. One of the films teased was James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, starring Idris Elba as Bloodsport.

When wishing the actor a happy birthday recently on Twitter, Gunn revealed that he actually wrote the character of Bloodsport for Elba, despite never having met the actor before:

“I rarely write roles for actors I’ve never met, but I did exactly that for @idriselba in #TheSuicideSquad & couldn’t be happier I did – you went beyond my expectations as an actor AND as a human being. I can’t wait for folks to see you as #Bloodsport. Happy Birthday, my friend!”

Hopefully, this all means that Elba and Bloodsport are a match made in heaven and that he will be one of the standout components of the movie. With such a colorful cast of characters, it’s certainly going to take something special to stand out.
